Would you rather resemble a Yeti or a surfer this winter? Fortunately you don’t have to sacrifice fashion for warmth when the cold winds begin to howl.

Here’s some top winter wardrobe tips to help you stay warm and look cool.

Hoodies

A decent hoody is a staple in any surfers wardrobe, but with the cold surf season looming, it’s time to up your hoody game and go for something warmer. You don’t need to go big and bulky to stay warm.

Thicker fabrics, knits and sherpa lined hoodies will protect you from post-surf chills without making you look like the Michelin man. Keep your Autumn surf style, just get more extreme with your fabrics.

Jeans

Winter surfing isn’t as easy as summertime, where you can slowly peel off your wetsuit and dry your boardies by bathing in the sun. As soon as those cold winds strike, it’s time to get your jeans on in a new PB time.

But the baggies most of us loved as younger surfers are near impossible to find. Skinnies might be the new cool but not when changing in a hurry. Shirts

The best way to warm up is to layer up. Rather than bulking up with heavy layers, try multiple lightweight layers as they trap warmth in better.

Shirts are great for layering as you can wear them over tees and under hoodies, and keep your style casual. Shirts are pretty versatile too, throw a dark flannel shirt on with some smart jeans and you’re set for post surf party.

Shoes

It’s universally recognised that Padded tongues, chunky soles and transformer-style trainers are a thing of the past. Anyone wearing them now is probably clinging onto their youth or refusing to let go of these over sized slippers.

These days even old school surfers have switched to low profile Vans and Converse shoes. With hardwearing canvas, grippy rubber soles and funky designs there’s a pair to match every season.

Headwear

Nothing says winter like woolly headwear, and there’s no hard and fast rules about what you wear or how you wear it. So if you want to go bold and colourful then just do it. Large and slouchy styles with a thick knit might look cool, but won’t do much to keep you warm.

Try something that’s a better fit and lined, if you want to keep your head warm after a winter surf session. Chances are you wear a hood for cold water surfing, so keep it covered when you’re back on dry land.
