Aussie surfer Tyler Wright has claimed the 2011 ASP Women’s World Tour – Rookie of the Year Award. Tyler finished the season an impressive 4th, topped only by Carissa Moore, Sally Fitzgibbons and 4 times world champ Steph Gilmore.
At just 17, Tyler Wright still has many years ahead to claim the World Title, and she has made a fantastic start to her surfing career. Pre 2011, Tyler had already claimed two ASP Women’s World Title events (Beachley Classic, 2008 and O’Neill Women’s World Cup, 2010) as a wildcard. In the first event (Roxy Gold Pro) Tyler reached the final, and finished in the top 5 for every event in the series. Now that’s impressively consistent for her first year on the Pro tour.
Despite the tour being rather short and sweet this year, 2011 has witnessed a rival. A vivacious vanguard of young women have not just lifted expectations in the water, they have redefined them. The Women’s ASP World Tour 2012 promises to be bigger and better, and with these young guns all firing I can’t wait.
In the extended season break, Tyler will no doubt be shredding with her Rip Curl team mates Alana Blanchard, Pauline Ado and Bethany Hamilton. Brother Owen Wright will also be a big inspiration, as he continues to surf extremely well during his first couple of years on the Men’s World Tour.
Congratulations Tyler Wright, and in celebration of your achievements here’s a visual tribute:
