The New Longboarder Magazine – Volume One

Think surf mags are a thing of the past? Think again.

A salty crew of exceptional longboarders are on a mission to unite a global cross-stepping community and celebrate their thriving culture.

To find out more we asked the founder a few questions.

Interview with Longboarder Magazine founder Chris Thomson

Chris Thomson with toes on the nose

1. For those that don’t already know, who are you?

My name is Chris Thomson, I’m based in Newquay, Cornwall and am a dad to Dylan, Summer and Joel. I’m 42 and started surfing at the age of 9 on the Isle of Wight.

2. Why launch an actual magazine about longboarding?

I believe there was a gap in the market for a magazine or platform to showcase the many forms of longboarding from across the globe. Longboarding has surged in popularity in recent years bridging many different demographics.

3. You’ve got quite the crew of contributors, tell us a bit about them?

Sam Bleakley is the print magazine editor and has also produced several of our short films. He’s the WSL longboard commentator and has a PHD in writing amongst a huge list of other talents. We have a huge range of other contributors videographers, writers, artists and photographers. Way too many to list!

4. Favourite part of the limited first edition?

I think we’ve created a huge amount of momentum with the digital magazine with a ton of positive feedback from around the world. So I’m super excited to see where the print edition goes, we’ve had hundreds of pre-orders already across the UK, Europe, USA and as far away as Australia. The “want” is certainly there and it’s awesome to be able to create something others are so passionate about.

Longboarder Magazine lined up nicely

5. Toughest thing about launching a surf mag?

Paying for it. Lol. Nothing like launching a new venture in a cost-of-living crisis and a recession. However just like surfing, I have a passion for business, so I actually enjoy the challenge of problem solving.

6. When and how can people buy a copy of Longboarder Magazine?

People can pre-order now, by going to 10 Over Surf Shop online and it will be stocked in all good surf shops around Europe from May 2023.

7. You’ve ticked the boxes for surf pro, surf coach, surf travel company creator, surf shop owner, surf mag founder, anything left on the list? Shaper maybe?

Sadly not shaper; I’m terrible with tools and DIY. I’ll stick to my marketing agency Marwick Marketing, 10 Over Surf Shop and now Longboarder Magazine. I want more future surf trips, not less!

Disclaimer: I was not incentivised to write this post. I’m just genuinely stoked and wanted to support surfers who have the heart and courage to launch a new surf mag in today’s digital age.
