Sorry I’ve gone to Lacanau, France for two weeks but normal service will resume on 28th September 2011.
I will be travelling with my beautiful partner, my 3 year old daughter and without a surfboard! Don’t worry I still plan to be tucking in to those picture perfect French barrels. I’ll tell you how and if my plan was successful on my return.

In August and late July Lacanau is very busy, but if you walk 10-15 minutes north or south you’ll find a much quieter spot, with good waves and the same beautiful beaches. Although you might also see the odd nudist.
In September the waves are much better and it’s a lot quieter. The first week in September is still fairly busy, but by the end of the month everyone has shut up shop for the winter. So best to go the first couple of weeks in September in my opinion.
Hi, I’m looking for advice on my potential first surf trip to SW France. I’d like to know where specifically there is a consistent left beach or point break for me, a 46 yr old average surfer. I mostly surf Saunton and nth Cornwall

Pretty much anywhere you decide to stop along the coast between Biarritz and Lacanau will offer a reliable beach break, lefts and rights, especially if you’re planning to go in October.
Why not try a few places and see where you prefer. The great thing about going out of the summer holiday season is the crowds will be smaller in the more popular spots e.g. Hossegor.
Whilst beach breaks are plentiful, point breaks are not a feature SW France is known for. You might have to drift down to Spain for a decent point break.

Yes, lots. Although if you’re going in October a lot of the holiday parks might be closed.
The French Aires are a great inexpensive way to camp if you have a camper van, motorhome or braving a tent, and there’s many by the SW beaches.
If you don’t mind spending a couple of Euros and plan to stay in one area, I expect you’ll get some good Air BnB rates in October.
