Free Surf Music

If you’re a little short of cash but need a fresh shot of surf sounds, then look no further.

Here’s 3 great musicians offering free music to freshen up your surf soundtrack:

Mat McHugh

Mat McHugh – Love Come Save Me

Mat McHugh is the frontman and creative force behind The Beautiful Girls. In 2010, after 12 world tours, eight records, 285,000 album sales with the band, Mat McHugh took to the road with John Butler playing solo and unplugged.

After a decade of striving to get bigger, better, louder and more colourful, Mat returned to his roots. Simple. Honest. Intimate.

Timmy Curran

Timmy Curran – Word of Mouth

Timmy Curran not only makes great music, he’s a spokesperson for the Surfrider Foundation and was a pro surfer for 10 years.

Tim is considered to be the pioneer of surfing’s “Aerial Revolution”. He’s famous for completing a full rotation, upside-down flip in two-foot surf at Rocky Point in Hawaii during winter of 2005.

Now Tim has retired from pro-surfing and is focussed on creating great surf tunes and saving the planet. Respect.

Timmy Curran’s recent albums are available for free on the Timmy Curran website.

Josh Garrels

Josh Garrels – Love & War & The Sea In Between

Ok, Josh isn’t a surfer and his style isn’t exactly surfy, but he did want to be a pro-skater and his latest album includes “the sea” in it’s title. I also discovered Josh Garrel via a tweet from a pro-surfer (can’t remember who).

Josh Garrels is a folk artist and crafts songs of compassion, hope, longing, and liberation. His latest album Love & War & the Sea In Between was offered for free download for a year, but is now well worth the $8.99 price tag.

You can download a free EP of remixes and B-sides from the Josh Garrels website.

If you know of any other surfer friendly melodies, available for free, please leave a comment.
