Looking for an understated, super-comfy, and totally toasty wetsuit? I genuinely recommend New Zealand’s best kept secret: Coastlines Wetsuits.

Perfect for UK and North European waters, the Coastlines Insulator series conceals a soft and smooth merino wool lining so it feels like you’re wearing posh pyjamas.

No bull, just wool

Kiwis are well known for their easy-going, no-nonsense, outdoor-loving attitudes. Coastlines Wetsuits epitomise these Kiwi qualities.

No-nonsense design and marketing helps you assess their products with ease and clarity. For example, when describing the wetsuit lining there’s no ‘fever fibre’ or ‘E6 flash lining’, just a ‘wooly thermal lining’.

The wooly blend contains merino wool, a magical material that’s moisture-wicking, naturally-insulating, temperature-regulating, odour-preventing, breathable and soft. The unique wool blend also ensures the suit dries rapidly after use. So you keep warm and your suit stays fresh.

All wetsuits are black, tailored and elegant, with a simple two line logo on the shoulder and sleeve (representing the coastlines of the two islands of New Zealand). No camo prints, neon colours or other unnecessary flourishes.

Made by surfers for surfers

You probably haven’t heard of Coastlines before but they’ve been creating quality wetsuits for 40 years!

Started by a bunch of surfers in New Zealand back in the 80s, their vision remains much the same:

To make reliable and functional products for the everyday surfer to fulfil their ocean adventures, goals and pursuits.

The business is small with lean overheads. They sell on their own website and partner with only a handful of small independent stores. This helps keep the suits affordable and accessible for everyday surfers.

Their product development chain is short, allowing them to respond to feedback and make improvements quickly. To help minimise waste and impact on the environment, they use compostable and recyclable packaging. Not forgetting the natural wool materials for wetsuit lining.

They’ve also just started a premium rental service, to reduce unnecessary neoprene purchase and over consumption for one week’s use.

I’ve been testing out the 5/4 Merino Insulator Wetsuit with chest zip and built-in hood.

My first test run was on a Monday morning dawny in March. Dark and cold, I had to scrape the ice off my car. By the time I got to the beach it was starting to get light and had reached a tropical 2 degrees celsius. A chilly North Easterly was doing its best to tidy the 4-6ft waves, but it was still a 20 minute paddle out.

Admittedly, I generated some heat during the paddle out but I didn’t get cold for a second of the 90 minutes in the water. Thankfully, the suit was easy and quick to peel off too, meaning my extremities were back to room temperature within minutes of my drive to work.

It’s the first time I’ve tried a built in hood, and to be honest I’m not yet convinced. Sure it reduces the chance of leakage, but I usually spend a few weeks in the shoulder months wearing my winter suit with no hood or gloves. Before gleefully sliding into a slinky summer suit. A built in hood isn’t removable.

Maybe it’s time to invest in a 4/3 for shoulder months?

I’m 5’ 10’, 75kg ish, average build and men’s medium was a little snug in the shoulders at first but after three surfs it loosened and is now a perfect fit.

I really like the subtle design of the suit. I’m not a pro surfer and I don’t want to look like an eighties throwback, so the black simple suit is ideal.

It’s silky and comfy like all new suits should be, and looking at the taped seams and construction these suits have been built to last.

Dry time is quick. Overnight if hanging in the shower, a lot less when hung outside on a dry warm day.

In summary, the Coastlines 5/4 hooded insulator is a no nonsense, high quality, affordable wetsuit.
